Sociology of Psychiatry
Dr Martyn Pickersgill (SKAPE Associate Director) has recently given several presentations to diverse audiences on his Wellcome Trust University Award-supported research on the sociology of psychiatry. In particular, over 2016 he has spoken in Public Health in Copenhagen, Cultural Studies at Lund, and Law at Leeds. He has also addressed a mixed audience of mental health professionals at The State Hospital, Carstairs. Recent open-access articles on his wider work in the social studies of biomedicine (supported by the ESRC, Leverhulme Trust and Wellcome Trust) have been published in Social Science & Medicine, Public Understanding of Science, and Engaging Science, Technology & Society. A paper is forthcoming in a Special Issue of The Sociological Review on ‘Biosocial Matters: Rethinking Sociology-Biology Relations in the Twenty-First Century’. Routledge has just published a paperback of his co-edited collection, Knowledge, Technology and Law. Martyn continues to serve as a member of the BBSRC ‘Bioscience for Society’ Strategy Panel, and the ALLEA Permanent Working Group on ‘Science and Ethics’.
