Abstract

Calls for transparency have become a prominent response to the challenges posed by online political campaigning. And yet, evocations of this term often lack precision about what is desired and how impacts can be secured. This article reviews existing debates around digital campaigning to argue that current policy prescriptions for transparency lack detail about the focus, audience, discoverability, comprehensibility, reliability and impact of information to be rendered transparent. Diagnosing currently opaque desires for financial, source, data and targeting transparency, the article highlights questions about how these desires for information will be enacted and considers lessons for those interested in promoting transparency as a policy response
