Expertise & participation. Institutional designs for policy-development
On 8 December, we welcome Eva Krick (University of Oslo) to SKAPE as part of our seminar series. Please find further information from Eva here:
In the seminar, I would like to introduce my book ‘Expertise & Participation – Institutional designs for policy-development in Europe’ that has just been published by Palgrave Macmillan (https://www.palgrave.com/gp/book/9783030753283).
The book deals with the role of expert knowledge and public participation in modern governance and explores the relationship, tensions and compatibility of these increasingly important and partly conflicting sources of legitimacy and authority.
Its first part consists of in-depth case studies of particularly complex, multi-layered arenas of policy advice and consultation that were set up in the field of environment and climate policy in Germany and Norway and aimed particularly high in terms of knowledge quality, democratic inclusion and transparency. The book’s second part draws institutional design lessons about the right participant selection mode and the ideal participation structure of policy-developing arenas, the best stopping rule for the decision-making process and model transmission mechanisms between representative political institutions and subordinate, advisory and participatory bodies.
